The light in your salon is not just for show. It is a work tool that directly affects the quality of your work. When you colour hair, you need to see the right shades. When you cut, you need to see every detail. Poor light means you do not see what you are doing until the client gets home and stands in their own bathroom. That is when they suddenly notice that the colour looks different, or that the cut is uneven. It is not your craft that fails – it is the light.
CRI stands for Color Rendering Index and tells you how well a light shows colours as they look in daylight. The scale runs from 0 to 100, where 100 is perfect daylight. In a professional salon, you should use lighting with a CRI above 90. Why? Because anything below that gives false colours. A shade that looks perfect under a light with CRI 80 can look completely wrong in daylight. Your clients judge your work at home, not in your salon. That is why your lighting needs to show colours as they truly are.
Kelvin measures the colour of light. A low Kelvin number gives warm, yellowish light. A high Kelvin number gives cold, bluish light. For hair salons, 3000 Kelvin is the standard. It is a neutral, warm light that is close to natural daylight and shows hair colours correctly. Light at 4000 Kelvin or higher can make warm colours look cool, and vice versa. 3000 Kelvin gives you the balance you need for precise colour work.
Lumen tells you how much light a lamp actually gives. This is where many people go wrong. They buy cheap spotlights because the price is low, but forget to check the lumens. The result? They have to put up three or four spotlights to get enough light, when one good spotlight would have been enough. In the end, they spend more money and end up with a mess of cables and lamps on the ceiling.
It depends on your salon, but as a rule of thumb you should have at least 500–700 lumens per square metre at the workstations. If you have high ceilings or dark surfaces, you need more. A cheap spotlight may only give 300–400 lumens. A professional spotlight gives 800–1200 lumens or more. That means one good spotlight can replace two or three cheap ones. You get better light, less mess, and a salon that looks more professional.
When you buy cheap spotlights, you save money now, but pay more later. You need more lamps to get enough light. You need more time to hang them up. And when they break after a year or two, you have to buy new ones. Professional spotlights last longer, give better light, and need fewer lamps. It is a better investment.
