Lighting is one of the factors with the greatest impact on the result in a salon, but it is also one of the most overlooked. The wrong light means you cannot see what you are doing until the client gets home and discovers that the colour looks different in their own bathroom. There are several things to consider before you choose. Here are the most important ones.
This is the most important decision you will make. Spot lighting creates sharper contrast in the hair, which technically highlights the interplay of colours more attractively. On the other hand, spot lighting creates shadows more easily, for example under the client's neck or chin. Flatter, more diffuse lighting provides even, soft light without the same shadows, and many hairdressers and clients comment on how comfortable it is to sit under. The trade-off for soft light is that you sacrifice some contrast. If you have a workstation where colour accuracy is the top priority, spot lighting may be the right choice. If you want a calm, comfortable environment for the client throughout the treatment, diffuse lighting is often better. Many salons actually choose a combination of both types: spot lighting at the colouring station and diffuse lighting elsewhere.
Hairdresser lighting is generally set to 3,000 Kelvin. This is a deliberate choice because it creates warm, comfortable light in the salon while ensuring that the hair colour looks the same when the client leaves the salon and steps into daylight. Light that is too cool, meaning a higher Kelvin value, can make colours look yellowish or give a misleading impression of the shade you have just created. Some models can be adjusted to several Kelvin values if you prefer cooler light in a particular area of the salon, for example at reception or in the waiting area.
CRI, or Colour Rendering Index, shows how accurately light reproduces colours compared with daylight. The scale runs from 0 to 100, with 100 representing daylight. For professional colour work, you should use lighting with a CRI above 90. A low CRI can make an otherwise correct hair colour look wrong during the treatment itself, which is typically only noticed when the client gets home and sees it in ordinary light. This is one of the most overlooked reasons for dissatisfied clients after a colour treatment, and it is genuinely a lighting problem, not a colour problem. Lumens indicate how much light a lamp actually produces, and this is where many people get it wrong. A cheap spotlight may produce 300–400 lumens, while a professional spotlight such as Sunspot produces around 2,700 lumens. This means you typically need significantly fewer lamps to achieve the same amount of light than a cheap alternative would require. If you buy cheap, low-lumen spotlights to save money, you will therefore often end up investing in more lamps to achieve the same result, making the cheaper solution more expensive in the long run—and leaving you with a tangle of cables and fixtures on the ceiling as well.

The track follows the industry standard, so it is compatible with spotlights from the same system, even if you expand later. If you have a suspended 60x60 cm ceiling instead, there are light panels that fit directly into the ceiling grid rather than onto a track. Linear lights and round fixtures can alternatively be mounted directly on the ceiling or suspended from steel cables if you want a more floating look.
Professional lighting is designed to give you the best possible basis for working precisely when cutting, colouring and styling. Decorative lighting, on the other hand, is about creating atmosphere, for example in the waiting area, at reception or to highlight display shelves. If you are lighting the entire salon, it is worth combining professional lighting at the stations with softer decorative lighting elsewhere, so the salon is both functional and inviting.
The price ranges from a single spotlight to a complete track system with several fixtures and panels. If you are lighting an entire salon, it can be worthwhile to consider the complete solution rather than simply choosing the cheapest individual product. As described above, a high lumen output often means you can manage with fewer lamps, which is worth factoring into your total budget—not just the price per unit.

If your salon has a suspended 60x60 cm ceiling, Sun Square or Sunlight Square can be mounted directly in the ceiling grid instead of the standard panel typically installed there. Sun Square features microprismatic technology—a fine grid that creates a more flattering effect in the hair than an ordinary flat panel—and is available in a dimmable version, allowing you to switch between cool and warm white light depending on the task.
