Workstations for the hair salon

A workstation combines a mirror, shelf and often storage in one unit, making it the actual work area where you and your client sit during the haircut. At Just Add People, you’ll find workstations ranging from a single wall-mounted shelf to large freestanding units with room for several clients at the same time, so you can find the solution that suits your salon’s exact size and layout.

What is a workstation?

A workstation is the complete unit that the client sits in front of during the treatment, typically consisting of a mirror combined with a shelf or cabinet for tools and products. Unlike an ordinary mirror that hangs on its own, a workstation is designed to function as the focal point of the work area, with storage within reach while you work.

Guide: How to choose the right workstation

Here are the most important things to consider when choosing a workstation for your salon.

1. Wall-mounted or freestanding

A wall-mounted workstation is mounted directly on the wall and takes up as little space as possible, making it suitable for smaller salons or rooms where floor space is limited. A freestanding workstation, on the other hand, is placed in the middle of the room and can often be used from both sides, making it an efficient solution if you need to make the best use of a larger room or serve several clients from the same unit.

2. Number of client stations

The largest freestanding workstations are designed to serve up to 6 clients at the same time from the same unit, which is a significantly different investment from a single wall-mounted shelf. If you’re fitting out a new salon from scratch, it may be more space-efficient to choose one large freestanding unit rather than several individual mirrors, while also reducing the number of separate storage solutions you need.

3. Mirror quality

The mirror is the part of the workstation that is used the most, and its quality directly affects how accurately you can assess a colour or hairstyle during the treatment. A lower-quality mirror can produce a slightly distorted or discoloured image, making it harder to assess the result correctly before the client sees the finished look themselves. Always choose a workstation with a mirror tested for daily salon use rather than a generic furniture mirror.

4. Storage: shelves, drawers and cabinets

Open shelves provide quick access to the tools you use most often, while drawers and cabinets are better for keeping smaller equipment and consumables out of sight. Most workstations combine both, but the distribution varies considerably from model to model. Consider how much you actually need to store directly at the station, compared with what would be better kept in a trolley or cabinet elsewhere in the salon.

5. Material

Workstations are typically available in laminate, stainless steel or powder-coated steel. Laminate creates a stylish and warm look at a reasonable price, stainless steel suits a more modern, minimalist salon, and powder-coated steel creates a more distinctive, high-contrast appearance. All three materials are durable enough for daily use, so the choice is primarily about the look you want in your salon rather than durability.

6. Price and investment

The price range for workstations is wide, from a single wall-mounted shelf to a large freestanding unit with room for several clients, and it is one of the larger investments you make in a salon. A smaller wall-mounted model is a sensible choice if you only need to equip a few stations or have limited space, while a freestanding unit with several client stations offers better value per square metre if you’re fitting out an entire salon from scratch anyway. If you’re equipping several stations at once, you’re welcome to contact us for a combined sale.

Popular workstations

Pole joiner from Comfortel is one of our most versatile workstations, a freestanding model with a shelf and footrests, available in several colours and mirror combinations. Grande Verona, also from Comfortel, is a popular choice if you want a workstation with an integrated mirror and a more classic look. If you’re fitting out an entire salon with several client stations in one unit, the Island series from Ästetik is our most exclusive solution.

Brands we stock

We stock workstations from Comfortel, which covers most needs with a broad and versatile range, as well as Ästetik, which occupies the more exclusive end of the market with large, freestanding units for several client stations. We also stock workstation shelves from Vismara and freestanding solutions from Takara Belmont. If you’re unsure which brand best suits your salon, you can view the full brand overview and compare them across the range.

Choose the right furniture for the entire station

A workstation works best when combined with the rest of the work area. Consider matching your new workstation with hairdressing chairs that ensure comfort during long working days, hairdresser lighting that provides accurate colour rendering at the mirror, or a trolley that keeps your tools within reach if the workstation itself doesn’t have enough storage for your needs.

Fair prices and price match

At Just Add People, we deal directly with manufacturers and buy in large quantities, so we can offer you the best price without compromising on quality. This is especially relevant for an investment such as a workstation, where the price difference between models can be significant.

Frequently asked questions about workstations

What is the difference between a workstation and an ordinary mirror?

An ordinary mirror hangs on its own and needs to be supplemented with separate storage if you need it at the station. A workstation, on the other hand, is designed as a complete unit with a mirror and integrated shelf or cabinet, giving you tools and products within reach without having to place additional furniture beside it. This makes a workstation a more considered choice if you’re designing a station from scratch, rather than assembling separate pieces along the way. If you choose a standalone mirror instead, you’ll often end up needing to find space for storage elsewhere in the room.

Wall-mounted or freestanding, what should I choose?

It primarily depends on your space and how many stations you need to equip. A wall-mounted workstation takes up the least space and works well in smaller salons or individual stations positioned against a wall. A freestanding workstation requires more floor space, but can be used from several sides and serve several client stations from the same unit, often offering better value if you’re fitting out a larger room from scratch anyway. If you’re unsure, measure your room and compare it with the dimensions on the product page before making your decision.

How many client stations should a freestanding workstation have?

It depends on how many hairdressers will be working at the same unit at the same time and how much space you have available. A unit with 4 client stations is often sufficient for a small or medium-sized salon, while a unit with 6 client stations is better suited to larger salons with more employees. If you only need to equip a couple of individual stations, it may be cheaper to combine several smaller workstations rather than invest in one large unit with capacity you won’t use fully.

Which material is easiest to maintain?

Stainless steel and powder-coated steel are generally the easiest to keep clean, as they can withstand daily wiping with ordinary cleaning products without being damaged. Laminate is also easy to maintain day to day, but over time it can be more susceptible to scratches and impacts than the two metal options. Regardless of which material you choose, we recommend establishing a routine of wiping the surface after colour treatments, so stains don’t have time to set and become harder to remove later. If you choose laminate, it’s also a good idea to avoid abrasive cleaning products that can wear down the surface over time.

How much does a workstation cost?

Prices vary widely, from a single wall-mounted shelf at the lower end to a large freestanding unit with room for several clients at the higher end. The price primarily depends on the size, number of client stations and choice of material, while mirror quality and storage solutions also play a role. If you’re equipping several stations at once, we recommend that you contact us for a combined sale, as this often provides a better overall price than ordering individually, especially for larger, made-to-order units. It also gives you one coordinated delivery process rather than several separate deliveries over time.

What warranty is available on workstations?

You get at least a 2-year warranty on all workstations, regardless of which brand or model you choose. The warranty covers manufacturing defects in the frame, mirror, shelves and other parts, so you’re covered if something breaks during normal use in a regular salon. Please note that our general 14-day right of return does not cover made-to-order items or products customised specifically for your order. This is worth keeping in mind, as several of the larger workstations are made to order. If something does break within the warranty period, simply contact us and we’ll find the best solution together.
